Why tackle stereotypes?

Children’s awareness of the differential status of the sexes and gender discrimination are relatively late-developing phenomena. But they learn gender stereotypes much earlier.

Around 5 years of age gender stereotypes are most rigid. But at ages 7-8 there is an increase in flexibility. Hence, in order to break the stereotypes, it is the best age to intervene.

Research

Developmental psychologists Rebecca S. Bigler and Lynn S. Liben hypothesized a relationship between multiple classification skills and children’s ability to process counter stereotypic information.

Lack of multi-classification skills and exposure to gender stereotypes makes it difficult for children to move beyond the stereotypes. This restricts their ability to express themselves authentically.

Our card game aims to reduce gender stereotypes by exposing children to counter-stereotypical roles and behaviors. ‘Call It’ strives to build the ability to use multi-classification so that children grow up learning that it is possible for a man/woman to fall under many categories.

For eg. a woman could be a coder by profession, be interested in gardening, and have an assertive disposition.
